Why I specialise in light & airy wedding photography

A little note before we begin: In this blog, I’m sharing more about my photography style — light, bright, airy and natural. If you’re currently planning your wedding and wondering how your final photos may look, I hope this gives you a clearer idea of whether my style is the right fit for you.

Planning your Kent wedding is one of the most exciting times of your life — with a few moments of overwhelm, too, I’m sure. From choosing your dress to narrowing down the guest list (and figuring out the seating plan!), there’s so much to think about. After all, you’re marrying Your Person. It’s going to be One Of — if not THE — Best Day Of Your Life.

That’s why choosing the right wedding photographer is so important. You want someone who blends into your day with ease, capturing all the real, beautiful moments just as they are. Just as you are.

Now, I want to be completely honest — because transparency really matters to me. Over the past year, I’ve learnt I’m not the right photographer for every wedding. And that’s absolutely okay. Because I’ve also learnt where I shine brightest: photographing weddings in light-filled spaces and natural outdoor venues. That’s where I feel most at home. It’s where I’m creatively inspired, calm, and confident in the work I’m creating for you.

In this blog post, I want to take the time to walk you through what my aesthetic truly means — no fancy technical photographer terms — so that you can truly understand what light and airy wedding photography means, and whether I could be the right photographer for you and your Kent venue.

What does light & airy wedding photography actually look like?

Well, let’s take a look!

Light and airy wedding photography is all about gentle brightness, delicate colours, and natural light.

It feels genuine and complements my natural, candid approach perfectly. Think naturally glowing skin tones, pastel florals, and soft light pouring in through a window. The colours are subtle, but never overexposed or washed-out..

This style of photography gives you space to breathe. The emotions still come through, but it’s calm and clear — nothing is forced or overly dramatic. And because it’s all captured with natural light, your photos will have a softness that captures the heart of every moment.

The focus of my aesthetic is light…natural light. It brings a calm, timeless quality to your images, balancing quiet moments with joyful energy — so your photos feel both genuine and enduring.

What’s the opposite of light & airy photography?

There are so many beautiful styles of wedding photography. But to help you understand my work more clearly, it helps to look at the opposite.

You may have seen dark and moody wedding photography — with rich shadows, deep tones and lots of contrast. Often shot using flash or in lower light conditions, this style can look dramatic and cinematic. It’s beautiful, especially for rustic barns or candlelit chapels.

But it’s not my style. And I like to be really open about that.

In the day, I rarely use flash. I prefer to quietly capture moments as they unfold, using natural light to do the heavy lifting. No flashing cameras. No special lighting. Just quietly blending into the background, and using natural light as one of my best tools. That means the experience is less intrusive for you and your guests — and the final photos feel organic and unposed.

Of course, in the evenings, as the light falls, I will use flash. Just to reassure you. But for the majority of your day, I prefer to make the very most out of the natural lighting.

What types of venues work well for light & airy photography?

The clue is in the name, really! Light and airy venues make for light and airy wedding photography.

In the simplest terms, any indoor venue needs to be filled with natural light. And of course, outdoor spaces and venues always work well.

Here are the types of venues I photograph for Kent couples.

Indoors:

  • Orangeries, glasshouses and conservatories — full of soft, even light

  • Bright, modern barns with large windows and pale interiors

  • Elegant country houses with neutral-toned rooms and high ceilings

  • Registry offices with light walls and tall windows (like Maidstone)

  • Purpose-built outdoor-indoor venues like The Dreys in the beautiful Kent countryside

Outdoors:

  • Woodland clearings and tree-lined paths like Longton Wood

  • Orchards and gardens with dappled sunlight

  • Beaches and coastal venues like Beach Hut Weddings

  • Open countryside or private estates with ceremony options outside

Even if I haven’t photographed a wedding at your venue yet, I can usually tell from the space whether it’s going to work with my style. So do ask when you enquire!

As well as the venues mentioned above, these are some of my favourite Kent wedding venues that work for my light & airy photography style.

What kinds of venues don’t work so well

If you’re getting married at somewhere like Cooling Castle Barn or Jack’s Barn, I’d always advise you to find another photographer who will suit this darker aesthetic.

Venues like these simply don’t suit my light and airy style. Of course, this doesn’t mean your chosen venue isn’t beautiful or special. It simply means that my style of photography won’t truly be able to do them justice, and I’d genuinely prefer you to work with someone who can capture everything about your day.

You deserve to feel confident that your day will be captured authentically — finding the right photographer for your venue and aesthetics is so important.

A little extra detail on these darker venues

In case you’re wondering, darker barns, low-lit churches, or venues with small windows and lots of dark wood panelling tend to create tricky lighting conditions. Often, these spaces require flash photography during important moments. For certain wedding photographers, this is their specialism! But for me, it’s more of a limitation – and that’s why I kindly turn away enquiries where the venues are like this.

This is my light & airy photography. This is where I shine.

Final thoughts from this Kent wedding photographer
